Kids Sports: High Risk Of Injuries?

She was on pins and needles until she got the phone call! Then finally she had her answer…she had made the cheerleading squad!

Believe it or not, I was not all that thrilled with my daughter wanting to be a “cheerleader”. I know, it might sound crazy, especially considering I was a cheerleader in high school. But it was different where I went to high school in Los Angeles growing up. There wasn’t much risk involved other than a pulled muscle. We didn’t do the stunts they do now.

And now my daughter has informed me (partially due to her petite size) she will be a “flyer”. She was thrilled! I…was not. The flyers are the ones who are literally thrown in the air by the “base” cheerleaders.

It got me thinking that it sure seems like our kids are in much riskier positions for sports injuries than when we were kids.

With all the select leagues that a lot of my friends kids are getting in, baseball, basketball, soccer, there are a growing number of injuries to these children. So shouldn’t we, as parents, do something about this?

Or are our egos getting in the way? We’re so excited for our children to be the “best” at their chosen sporting activity we fail to see the risks involved. Doctors are seeing an alarming number of sports injuries to children before they’ve even entered high school. When does it stop? And should it?
